Surau Al-Firdaus Lorong Buangkok is a surau (an Islamic assembly building) located in Kampong Lorong Buangkok, Singapore’s last remaining kampung. At its peak, the kampung housed 40 families.
Architecture and design
Surau Al-Firdaus Lorong Buangkok is housed in a one-storey building with a green corrugated roof that is slanted to allow for proper drainage of rain. Windows are designed to be wide for efficient ventilation.
Humble beginnings and development
In the 1960s, several villagers from Kampong Lorong Buangkok banded together to build Surau Al-Firdaus for the Malay families of the kampong. When it was first built, the surau could accommodate up to 80 worshippers for prayers. Rebuilding efforts took place in 1999 and following that, the surau could accommodate up to 200 people.
A place of worship for all
Surau Al-Firdaus Lorong Buangkok offers a place for people to pray. Beyond that, religious classes are provided at the site to serve the needs of its visitors. Interestingly, both residents and non-residents of Kampong Lorong Buangkok are users of the surau.
