In 1955, the "Ständige Schau Formschöner Industrieerzeugnisse" (Permanent Show of Elegant Industrial Products) was established in Villa Hügel in Essen, Germany. It evolved over the years to become the Red Dot Design Museum.
Today, the Red Dot Design Museum in Germany and Singapore presents the world’s largest exhibition of contemporary design. Every of these exhibits are winners of the international Red Dot Design Award, one of the world’s leading and largest design competitions.
Every year, design experts from all over the world decide which product design, design concept and communication design works will be on display in the Red Dot Design Museum. The experts make up the jury for the world renowned Red Dot competitions for Product Design, Communication Design and Design Concept. All entries are tested, discussed and assessed for their innovative design quality based on different criteria depending on their task and purpose. Only the best designs pass through the rigorous adjudication process to receive the coveted Red Dot quality seal - and thus their deserved place in the Red Dot Design Museum.
The Red Dot Design Museum in Singapore was established in 2005 at Maxwell Road. In 2017, the Museum moved to the present location along the Marina Bay.
The museum is one of most interesting places to visit in Singapore. It is a key attraction along the beautiful bay and it is the only museum in Singapore that opens late at night until 11.00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
A visit to the museum is more than just an education trip but rather, entering into a world of design at the Marina Bay.
In addition to design exhibitions, the museum features one of the best design shop where you can buy carefully curated design objects from around the world and also the best designs produced by Singapore designers. The design cafe & bar also features recipes which are redesigned into graphic design projects and highly "instagramable" in the form of cubes, craft beer, gourmet coffee and tea.
