Komala Vilas is a vegetarian restaurant established in 1947 by Murugiah Rajoo, who arrived from India in 1934 at the age of 14. Murugiah was first employed as a shop assistant in the previous restaurant that occupied the unit. When the proprietor returned to India in 1947, his friends persuaded him to buy the restaurant. The restaurant was then renamed Komala Vilas. The vegetarian restaurant also used to provide free copies of Indian newspapers and Tamil magazines to its customers. Besides being famous for its affordable vegetarian meals, the restaurant’s yoghurt (thairu) and yoghurt drink (lassi) are popular amongst patrons. Currently, besides the main restaurant at 76 Serangoon Road, Komala Vilas has three other restaurants in the Little India area.
