Introduction

Chiating @ Katong-Joo Chiat is an initiative by the NTU History Sub-club in close collaboration with the National Heritage Board’s Heritage Activation Nodes (HAN), with a focus on the Katong-Joo Chiat area. In each episode, hosts from the sub-club chat with members from various communities in Katong-Joo Chiat, sharing their unique and interesting stories with the public. 

Chiating podcast episodes will be uploaded throughout the year. Look out for more episodes coming your way in 2025!

Episode 1: Introduction to Katong-Joo Chiat

Welcome to the first episode of Chiating@Katong-Joo Chiat! In this series, we explore facets of Katong-Joo Chiat's history that you may not have heard of. In this pilot episode, we look at the history of the area: from its beginnings as an agricultural estate set up by the Europeans during pre-colonial Singapore to the cultural heritage spot it is today, replete with vibrant art and delicious food. Topping off the episode, we will also learn more about some of the diverse communities which lived and grew within the area. Join us as we travel back in time to learn about the hidden vibrancy of the area's history and heritage!

 

Episode 2: Meet the Eurasians!

Welcome back to Chiating@Katong-Joo Chiat! In our second episode, we will meet our first guest on this podcast: Sharon from the Eurasian Association! The Eurasian community has been a prominent force shaping the history and heritage of Katong-Joo Chiat, and in this behind-the-scenes interview, we will learn more about the community’s development in the area!

 

We begin by examining the various reasons the Eurasian community moved into Katong-Joo Chiat, and then look at some spaces of significance such as the Church of the Holy Family, the St Patrick’s School and even a bakery that served as a dating site! We will also explore various aspects of the Eurasian community, such as favourite local topics, food, and other activities such as song and dance. Thanks to Sharon and the Eurasian community, this episode uncovers the intricacies of this small but significant community in Singapore’s heritage and history.

The NTU History Sub-Club is run by a group of passionate History Undergraduates. The Sub-Club aims to create a vibrant community for both History Undergraduates and members of the public through the fulfillment of three objectives, namely to cultivate an interest in History among all NTU students, collaborate with external organisations on History-related projects, and promote bonding among History students.
