Soon after it opened in 1877, the Singapore branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation became one of the first members of the local Chamber of Commerce. One of the three British banks that controlled much of the banking business in Singapore during the early 1900s, the bank was founded in Hongkong in the 1860s.
