After the successful capture of Batavia from the French, Thomas Stamford Raffles was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of Java. In 1812, he led a 1,200 strong troop to attack the walled city of Yogyakarta, where the Sultanate had been openly hostile to the British presence. The kraton or palace of the Sultan was sacked and destroyed. This sketch of kraton was reproduced in Major William Thorn’s The Conquest of Java, his account of the British conquest of Java published in 1815.
