This is a purchase document for a Singer sewing machine. The machine was originally purchase in 1940, and paid over installments with the full sum paid in 1944. Due to the Japanese occupation, the receipt lists the shop's address in 'Syonan-to' and the date in the Shōwa system of calculating.The Singer brand began in Glasgow in 1867, and as popularity grew it opened factories worldwide. The sewing machines it created were the first treadle powered, belt powered and eventually electricity powered sewing machines. Owning a sewing machine at home was common among families in Singapore, whose members would use it to make their own clothes.
