Photo of a family Lim Chan Ngam (林赞岩) at Toa Payoh Seu Teck Sean Tong

This photograph depicts the family of Lim Chan Ngam (林赞岩) at the Seu Teck Sean Tong temple in Toa Payoh Lorong 6. Lim (1904-1967), was a pre-WWII immigrant who came to Singapore from China and became a successful trader dealing in rubber in the Riau islands. He made a substantial fortune until unfortunate circumstances led to the collapse of his business. In this photo, he stands at the top left of the group. Established in 1942, Toa Payoh Seu Teck Sean Tong was first situated in Kampong Hup Choon Hng. The kampong, which was cleared during the redevelopment of Toa Payoh town, was located between the Lorong 8 market and where the current temple stands today. The temple building at its present site was completed in 1959, and enshrines the Taoist deity Song Da Feng as its patron saint, as well as other deities. The worship rituals and cultural traditions of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism are practised here.
