Batik sarong

Batik sarongs such as this were worn by Peranakan women to match their baju panjang and kebaya. This purple and grey sarong features motifs such as flowers and butterflies, that were popular with the Peranakan Chinese communities in Indonesia and the Straits Settlements of the mid-20th century. Peranakan women often preferred to buy batik from producers in towns on the north coast of Java, such as Cirebon, Pekalongan and Lasem. This sarong is signed "Liem Tek Hwa / Kedungwuni". Kedungwuni is a batik producing area near Pekalongan.
