Large pink kamcheng with green panels

Kamchengs are covered jars that served primarily as food vessels for festive occasions like weddings and birthdays. This kamcheng is among the largest pieces produced for the Peranakan community. It belongs to the category of polychrome overglaze enamelled ceramics known as “Nyonyaware”, a class export Chinese porcelain made in the 19th and early 20th centuries to suit the tastes of the Peranakan communities of Southeast Asia. Nyonyaware is distinctive for its combination of bright colours, profusion of decoration and preferred motifs of peony and phoenix.
