This is a leaflet for a campaign by Radio Singapore (under the Ministry of Culture) advising radio owners to purchase licences for their radio sets. It informs the public that a separate license is required for each portable and car radio set, and that Wireless Inspection Officers would be going door-to-door to check licences. In 1946, the government had formed the Pan-Malayan Department of Broadcasting, known on air as Radio Malaya. The Singapore-based station provided programmes for the entire Malay Peninsula. On January 1, 1959, the Singapore station was renamed Radio Singapore, while the Federation’s services continued to be known as Radio Malaya. By 1959, radios had come into widespread use in Singapore. In 1959, Radio Singapore broadcast 13,500 hours of programmes, more than half of which were music-related, followed by talks including adult education, dramas and documentaries, news bulletins and school broadcasts. It offered four channels with programmes in English, Malay, Tamil and seven Chinese dialects.
