This photograph depicts some of the civilian internees at Changi Prison during World War II, including the nurse Margaret Slowright Grant and her colleague and best friend, Janet Jeffries. Both women are located on the lower left part of the photograph.Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Grant started work as a nurse with Edinburgh City Hospital before being posted to Kuala Lumpur in 1940 as part of Queen Alexandra's Nursing Service. She came to Singapore slightly before the Japanese invasion of the island in 1942 and was likely posted to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. Following the British surrender, she was interned with the other nurses in Changi Prison, including her best friend Janet Jeffries. Despite internment, these nurses continued to offer medical support and assistance to the internees to the best that they could, even setting up their own hospital to offer medical services with the little that they had.
