Birthday card made by Changi prison internees

This birthday card was made by female internees in Changi Prison during World War 2, and presented to Margaret Slowright Grant for her birthday. It features a drawing of the prison exterior, which was referred to as "The Dungeon" amongst the inmates, and opens up to feature drawings of rabbits and the signatures of her fellow inmates including her colleague and best friend, Janet Jeffries.Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, Grant started work as a nurse with Edinburgh City Hospital before being posted to Kuala Lumpur in 1940 as part of Queen Alexandra's Nursing Service. She came to Singapore slightly before the Japanese invasion of the island in 1942 and was likely posted to Kandang Kerbau Hospital. Following the British surrender, she was interned with the other nurses in Changi Prison, including her best friend Janet Jeffries. Despite internment, these nurses continued to offer medical support and assistance to the internees to the best that they could, even setting up their own hospital to offer medical services with the little that they had.
