This cup and saucer set is used to serve hot beverages such as coffee and tea in Killiney Kopitiam outlets in Singapore. Founded by a Hainanese immigrant in 1919, it was originally known as Kheng Hoe Heng Coffeeshop and was famous for its traditional charcoal-grilled bread toast, as well as coffee and tea. When Mr Woon Tek Seng, a regular patron who is Hainanese himself, bought over the coffee shop in 1992, he renamed it Killiney Kopitiam after its location at Killiney Road. While Killiney Kopitiam has since expanded its menu to include other local dishes such laksa and mee siam, its traditional bread toast with kaya (a jam made from eggs, coconut milk, sugar and pandan leaves) with coffee or tea remain its signature offering. Killiney Kopitiam has also made inroads overseas, with shops set up in countries including Malaysia, Australia and the United States.
