Gombroon pierced bowl

Bowls like this are known as “Gombroon ware”, named for the Persian Gulf port from which they were shipped. They were produced from the late 17th century through the early 19th century, probably in kilns near Isfahan. The sides are pierced with ‘rice-grain’ designs that have been filled with a thin glaze which allows light to pass through, probably the Persian potter’s attempt to emulate the translucency of Chinese porcelain. Black trefoils decorate the raised bump in the centre, which marks the depression on the underside, providing better stability when holding the bowl. Such small bowls for pouring water, are still used in the Islamic world today.
