This is a vinyl record of the play “Mount Wutai” (五台會兄 Wutai Huixiong), an opera retelling of the historical folk stories of the Generals of the Yang Family performed in Hakka. The record was produced by the Khek Community Guild National Dramatic Corporation. Hakka opera is a lesser-known form of Chinese opera that is distinct from Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese opera, which are the predominant forms of Chinese opera performed in Singapore. The art form supposedly originated in Meizhou city, Guangdong province, during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Hakka opera is distinguished by its integration of Buddhist and Taoist music, as well as the language used, being remarkably similar to modern Chinese.
