This face mask named “Peranakan Story 2” by the Singaporean label Onlewo includes designs that the designer Mike Tay associate with Peranakan material culture. These include floral tiles and a kamcheng (Hokkien for ‘covered jar’) that he spotted at the Peranakan Museum. Known for their Singapore-inspired printmaking and upholstery for home décor and gifts, Onlewo started selling face masks made from their existing fabric during the Covid-19 pandemic. This mask belonged to Mrs Linda Chee, a 9th-generation Peranakan and the long-time editor of The Peranakan magazine from 2004 to 2016 and 2021 to 2022. A strong contributor of Peranakan cultural events, Linda is the wife of Colin Chee, president of The Peranakan Association Singapore from 2018 to 2022. She matched this mask with sarong kebaya at formal events as an expression of her Peranakan identity.
