BINhouse was founded in 1989 by Josephine (Obin) Komara, Roni Siswandi and Yusman Siswandi, three Second-generation textile connoisseurs and producers since Independence of Indonesia, mentored by First-generation master, KRT Hardjonagoro Gotikswan, who was cultural advisor to President Soekarno and the late Sultan of Solo. BINhouse batik are produced on textured silk fabrics instead of the traditional cotton. Softer and more malleable, the silk batik allows for easier wrapping and tying around the body—even without using a belt or fastener—redefining how batik cloths can be worn and enabling wearers to create their own styles. BINhouse also started making exclusively hand drawn batik, only producing stamped batik much later, when a second line of products became necessary in the expansion of the business. A master of many Indonesian fabric patterning techniques, BINhouse often seamlessly integrates additional techniques—from embroidery and needlework to supplementary weaving—into their batik textiles and doing so in extremely innovative ways.
