'Crazy Rich Asians' film poster

Hollywood film Crazy Rich Asians, based on Singaporean author Kevin Kwan’s best-selling novel of the same name, follows the story of Chinese American Rachel Chu and her boyfriend, Nick Young, who travel to Singapore to meet his family and attend his best friend’s wedding. In Singapore, Chu navigates the prejudices and hostility of Young’s wealthy family, who do not want to accept her due to her background as an American-born, upper-middle-class economics professor who is the daughter to a working-class, single-mother. The film was released in August 2018. In Singapore, the movie topped the local box for two weeks after it opened in late August. It was praised for being the first Hollywood film to feature an all-Asian cast in 25 years, and for departing from stereotypical Hollywood depictions of Asians. However, the film was also criticised, particularly in Singapore, for its misrepresentation of Singapore’s multicultural landscape and its celebration of the city's excessive wealth, whilst ignoring its socio-economic struggles.
