This dress was made by the Shanghainese dressmaker, Mr Cheong Foo Yong, for his daughter Lucy. Cheong was born in 1933 in China and migrated to Singapore at the age of seven. When he was about sixteen, Cheong worked as an apprentice dressmaker and subsequently became a bespoke dressmaker. In 1960, he opened his shop ‘DANA Gowns Dressmaker’ at Maju Avenue. When his daughters got married, Cheong personally made all their dresses. This dress was made for Lucy based on a pattern in a bridal magazine. As Lucy was abroad in Canada, Cheong made the dress without first measuring his daughter. He made it slightly smaller than Lucy's measurements, knowing that all brides lose weight in the stress of planning a wedding. Lucy wore the dress for her wedding at the Foochow Methodist church and reception at the Hotel New Otani. The dress was worn with a matching headpiece and veil, white shoes with a scalloped edge, pearl earrings and a pearl necklace.
