This thumbscrew action nutcracker in the form of a ship’s wheel bearing the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) flag was a souvenir from the passenger liner SS Carthage from the 1950s. As part of the P&O fleet, SS Carthage was launched in 1931 and set out on its maiden voyage the following year where its ports of call included London, Penang, Singapore, Hong Kong and Shanghai. Souvenir such as this nutcracker were often found in the shop on board P&O passenger liners, which also sold other items such as toiletries, beauty products, leather goods, cameras and photographic films.
