This guide to Singapore was published by the Singapore Tourist Association, an association formed under the Ministry of Culture in 1960 with the aim of promoting Singapore as a tourist destination. The guide includes practical information to situate and assist tourists coming to Singapore. It also shows the ways in which Singapore was shaping its national identity as a young nation. In its welcome note written by then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Singapore is promoted as a unique destination that "offer[s] the traveller four great civilisations, all in one small island: three Asians, the Malay, the Chinese, and the Indian, and one European, the British." The book also lauds Singapore's industrialisation and modernization.
