A 3-piece Chinese export silver tea set

The silver teapot, silver sugar bowl and silver creamer are decorated in all-over repousse motif of bamboo leaves and branches on a matted ground, and intricate bamboo-form handles. An example of Chinese export silver for the European market, the vessels bear retailer marks of a Lombardic "H", for Hoaching, one of the largest silversmithing businesses based in Canton between 1825 and 1880. Whole sets of silver flatware and tea sets items were regularly produced from the 18th to mid-20th century. Though earlier pieces tended to imitate European aesthetics and motifs, increased awareness and demand resulted in the introduction of Chinese motifs and decorations. High quality workmanship at a low labour cost added greatly to the demand and appeal for such a market.
