This set of four chairs came from the Low family home, located along Emerald Hill Road. The house was built by their ancestor Low Koon Yee (1862-1926) in the 1920s. He was the largest developer on Emerald Hill. Upon his death, the house passed on to his son Low Peng Soy (died 1938), who owned Roxy Theatre on East Coast Road. The back splat of each chair is formed by an interconnecting network of C-scrolls, while shell and leaf carvings decorate the chair. Popular among Peranakans, so-called “brown and gold” furniture is characterised by the use of teak, combination of design influences, and fine gilding.
