Pintu pagar

This fence door (pintu pagar), came from the Low family home, which was located along Emerald Hill Road. The house was built by their ancestor Low Koon Yee (1862-1926) in the 1920s. He was the largest developer on Emerald Hill. Upon his death, the house passed on to his son Low Peng Soy (died 1938), who owned Roxy Theatre on East Coast Road. This type of double-panel, swinging door adorned entrances to Peranakan homes, providing a measure of security, privacy, and ventilation when the main door was left open during the day. Popular among Peranakans, this so-called “brown and gold” furniture is characterised by the use of teak, combination of design influences, and fine gilding.
