Decorated metal panels like these were used to decorate the ends of bolsters placed on a Chinese Peranakan bridal bed. The use of bolster plates probably originated from local Malay traditions, as they were not used in China. In the Straits Settlements, silver was a popular material to make bolster ends, although some were made in gold. These bolster ends are ornamented with peonies, leafy vines, and borders of small dots, all in repoussé. The repoussé technique involves hammering with fine tools on the reverse to create a relief pattern on the front. Peonies are symbols of honour, wealth, and love.
