Taken in 1928 by The Eastern Studio, this group photograph features the graduating cohort from Tuan Mong School (端蒙学校).Tuan Mong School was founded in 1906 by 28 Teochew leaders including Chen Yun Qiu, Leow Chia Heng and Zhang Xia Sheng. It was one of the first “new-style” Chinese primary schools that emerged in the 1900s. Such “new-style” schools offered modern subjects such as mathematics and science, a departure from the traditional schools that focused on the teaching of Confucian texts and classics. One of its founders, Sim Lian Hong, was also a member of the Tong Meng Hui (Chinese Revolutionary Alliance) and involved in the launch of local revolutionary newspaper Chong Shing Yit Pao (中兴日报) together with Teo Eng Hock and others.
