Taken in 1939 at Yeung Ching School, this group photograph features members of the Singapore Engineering Mechanics Association and commemorates the 11th anniversary of the founding of the Singapore branch. Yeung Ching School and the Singapore Engineering Mechanics Association, also known as the Chinese Engineering Mechanics Association, were both located on Club Street. Founded in 1928, the Singapore Engineering Mechanics Association, also known as the Chinese Engineering Mechanics Association, was one of the branches that was set up through British Malaya for Chinese artisans, mechanics and engineers. The majority of its members were Cantonese and many members of the association volunteered as mechanics for China’s war effort during the Second Sino-Japanese war.
