Wooden Plaque of the Singapore Engineering Mechanics Association (星洲机器行)

Founded in 1928, the Singapore Engineering Mechanics Association (星洲机器行), also known as the Chinese Engineering Mechanics Association(华人机器行), was one of the branches that was set up through British Malaya for Chinese artisans, mechanics and engineers. The association in Singapore was located on 88 Club Street and the majority of its members were Cantonese. Many mechanic volunteers for China’s war effort during the Second Sino-Japanese war were members of this association. The first branch named Kee Hee Hong (机器行, “Machinery Association”) was founded in Penang in 1876 and the association was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies in 1891. In 1930, a central body with representatives from all over Malaya was set up in Singapore and the Chinese Engineering Mechanics Association functioned more as a trade union. The association in Singapore (later known as the Singapore Chinese Mechanics Association) no longer exists and was said to have closed down during the late 1990s or early 2000s.
