This passbook was issued by POSB in 1964. The passbook's front page features the coat of arms of Singapore that was first introduced in 1959. POSB started under the Postal Services Department which was established by the British colonial government in 1877. The British aimed to encourage ordinary workers to save and provide for themselves against ill health and adversity. By 1955, POSB had approximately 154 thousand accounts registered with them. After a period of decline, POSB was revitalised as part of the government's attempt to promote domestic savings and grow industries. In 1972, POSB was made a statutory board. POSB bank accounts and passbooks were widely used amongst Singaporeans in the early nation-building decades.
