Sarong

This sarong is signed “Oey Siok Kiem”, which was one of the most successful batik workshops in the Kedungwuni district of Pekalongan. Located along the north coast of Java, Pekalongan was a major batik-producing centre from as early as the first decades of the 20th century.Large repeating flower bouquet motifs (buketan ) in the body (badan) and contrasting head section (kepala) of the garment were a popular feature on the batiks worn by Eurasian and Chinese Peranakan women. The introduction of this motif has been attributed to Eurasian batik makers, particularly Eliza van Zuylen (1863–1947), in whose style this batik was made.
