The Vanda Miss Joaquim is Singapore's National Flower, selected on 15 April 1981 from among 40 floral candidates to become one of Singapore's national symbols. Juliana Lim, the donor of this object, was working at the Ministry of culture soon after that. She was tasked with promoting the flower by contacting manufacturers, designers and textile producers to feature the orchid as a motif. The orchid became du jour on clothing such as dresses and shirts, and the orchid shirt became acceptable as formal wear. This saucer is part of a crockery set that was produced by La Germania and features the Vanda Joaquim orchid on it along with a short blurb about the flower.
