Red box with cypher of King George VI and key

This red despatch box contains the royal cypher of King George VI. It was made in the time of King George VI’s reign, and probably after “Emperor of India” was removed from his title, and “I” was hence dropped from his cypher. Thus, the box was probably made between June 1948 and February 1952. It might have been used by a Governor of Singapore. The box is made of wood with ram’s leather covering. The exterior is made of red laminate and the interior is made of black laminate. The words “John Peck & Son” are stamped in the inner lid of the box, referring to a company that manufactured supplies for the British royal stationery office.
