The Kallang Airport estate and satellite town, built on part of the former Kallang Airport, was one of SIT’s biggest projects. The housing estate, with 1,183 flats, was meant to be built on part of the former Kallang Airport itself and was part of a larger development plan which included a proposed construction of an Olympic stadium, schools, two hotels, and a park. Besides its role in providing housing, the Kallang Airport Estate was also seen as a key industrial hub – with industries in Kallang expected to employ more people than those in Jurong. The SIT Kallang Airport estate plaque was unveiled by Mr Abdul Hamid Bin Haji Jumat. Mr Jumat founded the Singapore’s UMNO in 1955 and was the first Malay minister in both Mr David Marshall and Mr Lim Yew Hock’s cabinets. He was also part of the team that went to England for the Merdeka talks in 1956 and 1957.
