Japanese Occupation Muslim Divorce Certificate

This is a certificate administered by a kadi, an appointed official to oversee solemnisations and marriages, for the granting of a divorce between a couple living in Geylang during the Japanese Occupation. The certificate, issued by the Syonan Tokubetu-si, or municipal arm of the Japanese administration on 24 December 2604 (1944), details several important details about the divorce, including the names of the couple, the witnesses to and location of the divorce, the nature of the divorce as well as evidence of alimony. Divorce and other various practices continued to be administered in varying degrees during the Japanese Occupation as part of various concessionary measures that were implemented by the Japanese administration throughout the Occupation; at the same time, Muslim divorce also peaked during the years of 1941-1945, illustrating the shifting attitudes towards divorce against the larger social context.
