Portrait of a mestiza

This watercolour of a mestiza woman (mixed indigenous/Spanish heritage) is attributed to Filipino artist Justiniano Asunción y Molo (1816–1896). It is an example of a “Tipos del Pais” (types of the country) image, depicting peoples and costumes typical of the country. It was popularised by the famous Filipino artist Damian Domingo (1796–1834), and Asuncion was his pupil. These drawings were typically produced as part of a set, and sold as souveniors to traders or tourists in Manila.
