Letter from Thomas Stamford Raffles to the Revd Thomas Raffles

Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles established a British East India Company trading factory in Singapore in 1819. This letter is part of a collection of letters he wrote to his cousin, the Revd Thomas Raffles, an influential religious leader in Liverpool to whom Raffles was close and with whom he corresponded frequently. Written in 1817 during Raffles’ return to England and from Claremont during his first visit to Princess Charlotte and Prince Leopold, this letter contains an invitation to Rev Raffles to join Raffles and his wife Sophia on a tour of Europe and mentions Raffles’ intention to sail for India in August that year.
