Ewer with beast spout

This barrel-shaped stoneware ewer comes from the Thanh Hoa region in northern Vietnam. It has a wide mouth rim, below which, it is decorated with a band of carved lotus petals. Its spout is modelled in the form of a beast of some kind and the handle is molded in the shape of a parrot. The ewer is covered in a crackled ivory coloured translucent glaze. The form of the body tapers down to a foot rim and flat underfoot, which is unglazed and reveals a pale stoneware body underneath.By the early 11th century, the Vietnamese Ly dynasty (1009-1225 A.D), came to power, freeing itself of Chinese domination and the arts of this period took on a more local character.
