Shard with firing support

This shard, which shows a fish painted in iron-brown pigments, is most probably the base portion of a dish. Dishes painted with a central fish motif are the most representative wares from the Sukhothai kilns. The cross-section of the shard shows that Sukhothai potters used a dark grey clay body which they covered with white slip before painting on it. A firing support has also adhered to the base of this shard, and reveals how these vessels were originally stacked during firing in the kilns.
