This octagonal box features moulded decoration of a crane flying amid clouds on the cover. The panels with vertical ribbing on the sides of this porcelain box appears to simulate the woven basketry panels seen on lacquer boxes. The box has a chalky-white body that is covered with a faint qingbai ('bluish-white') glaze. Covered boxes are one of the most common products among qingbai wares. Such boxes may have been used for containing cosmetics, medicines, or incense among other things.
