Commemorative Salver

This commemorative salver was made in memory of Sophia Maria Rooselaar who died in Batavia on 14 September 1722 at the age of 17 years. She was the wife of Wigbold Slicher Antonisz, a junior merchant and second administrator of the warehouses of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) on the islands of Onrust and De Kuijper. Such commemorative silverware was commonly produced in eighteenth-century Batavia, and they would have been gifted to close friends and relatives in memory of the deceased individual.
