This plaque stopper is one of a group of six wooden stoppers. These stoppers were used to hold up and support plaques which were usually hung above the entrance door or the main reception area of a Peranakan home. This object belonged to Wee Bee Neo, a prominent Sang Khek Umm or mistress of wedding ceremonies. As a wedding specialist, she was in charge of the bride’s hair and jewellery, and guiding the young lady through the proper rituals.
