This certification of registration belonged to Mdm Tan Soh Hui. Mdm Tan moved to Singapore with her mother from Swatow, China at the age of 8 in 1947. She was legally registered a Singapore citizen ten years later with the passing of Citizenship Ordinance in 1957. Under the new law, residents born in Singapore or the Federation of Malaya and British citizens who had been residents for two years were eligible for Singapore citizenship. Citizenship by naturalisation was offered to those who had resided in Singapore for ten years and were prepared to swear loyalty to Singapore.
