Engraved Brass 'Alam

Alams or processional standards, are part of the ritual of Muharram, which marks the anniversary of the martyrdom of Hussein, for Shia Muslims. Hussein is a key figure for the Shia branch of Islam, as he is considered as the rightful heir of the Prophet Muhammad. Muharram is a major event in Deccani Shia tradition, and brass alams such as this one would be carried in places of honour, accompanied by a parasol, peacock feathers, incense and flowers. This fine example is In the shape of the protective hand, each finger in turn engraved with a processional standard. One side is incised with kufic script on a stippled ground; the other side divided into bands. The five fingers symbolise Muhammad, Fatima, Ali, Hussein and Hassan.
