This pair of lantern covers is embroidered with auspicious motifs such as deer, qilin, elephant, pomegranates and peonies. Floral motifs and the eight buddhist emblems are used to decorate the upper part of the lantern cover. During festive occasions like weddings, Peranakans used various, elaborate, decorative textiles and objects for ceremonies and presentation. Early pieces of silk and metal-thread embroidery show more Chinese or Malay influences, by the 20th century, European-inspired beadwork became popular.
