Tray cover

This velvet tray cover was embroidered with a large phoenix in the centre, surrounded by floral motifs, butterflies and birds. Tray covers were used by Peranakans to decorate trays to lay out jewelry or other wedding gifts during the lap chai ceremony to transport wedding gifts. During festive occasions like weddings, Peranakans used various, elaborate, decorative textiles and objects for ceremonies and presentation. Early pieces of silk and metal-thread embroidery show more Chinese or Malay influences, by the 20th century, European-inspired beadwork became popular.
