Cesare Syjuco’s art operates across the disciplines of visual art, poetry and art criticism. In recognition of his contributions to the arts in The Philippines, Syjuco has received a range of awards including the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines (TOYM) Award for Art & Culture Advancement in 1992, the Gerry Roxas Foundation Presidential Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Arts, the Gawad CCP Sa Sining Biswal from the Cultural Center of The Philippines. Mythology: Return History’s Whore, His Mother is part of a series developed by the artist that adapts illegible writing, the work questions the construction and veracity of history through this imaginary language. The work was created during the “EDSA period” that led to the People Power Revolution of 1986 and subsequent departure of the Ferdinand Marcos regime. It was also during this time that Syjuco co-founded with his wife Jean Marie, the first iteration of ART LAB – an experimental art facility that would go on to become an important site for multi-media experimentations in the 1990s.
