This photograph, most likely taken by the Scottish photographer John Thomson, presents a view from Pulao Brani, a small island south of Singapore. In the 1860s, the island was equipped with repair docks for naval vessels and had a coaling depot. This particular view is likely taken from a bungalow on the island. Later on in 1890, a tin smelting facility would be established on the island, used for processing tin from the Malay States.
