The Horsburgh Lighthouse on Pedra Branca was designed by and constructed under the supervision of John Turnbull Thomson, the government surveyor and superintendent of roads and public works in Singapore. Completed in 1851, the lighthouse was the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. This artist for this painting was Thomson himself, who depicts the lighthouse standing firm amidst the crashing waves upon Pedra Branca, ensuring the safe passage of ships in the background.
