This etching by the Dutch artist Romeyn de Hooghe depicts and commemorates the victory of the Dutch East India Company's expedition against the Kingdom of Makassar and its ruler Hasanuddin. The illustration presents the scenes of battle taking place on the landscape of Makassar, with the portrait of the leader of the expedition, Admiral Cornelis de Speelman on the top left and his Bugis ally Arung Palakka on the top right. The letterpress text below the illustration includes two poems by the celebrated Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel.
